Our history

Keeler has benefited from a broad and interesting history, spanning over 117 years! Discover our legacy and the key elements that made Keeler what it is today:

1917 The inception of Keeler​

American-born Charles D Keeler, opened his first practice in Wigmore Street, London, supplying high quality dispensing services and spectacles to the patients of ophthalmologists.

Establishment

After launching several practices in England and their first wide angle ophthalmoscope, the C Davis Keeler company was established with Charles H Keeler as its Managing Director.

Windsor HQ

Keeler moved its spectacle prescription factory from London, establishing a scientific laboratory tradition at Sefton Lawn alongside the family headquarters in Windsor.

Keeler goes global

Post war, Keeler moved ahead with the establishment of Keeler Optical Products Ltd to design, produce and sell ophthalmic instruments worldwide.

Growth in USA ​

Keeler Optical Products becomes incorporated in Philidelphia, USA.

Product growth

Keeler launched its Fison indirect ophthalmoscope

50th anniversary

Keeler celebrated its 50th anniversary and launched the Keeler Award for Clinical Studies, assisting ophthalmologists with furthering their clinical experience.

Keeler is awarded

Following Charles Keeler’s OBE for services to the partially sighted in 1969 and his honorary membership of the Contact Lens Society in 1977, Keeler won a British Design Award for its pocket diagnostic set hand instruments.

Keeler expands

Dollond & Aitchison Group plc purchased Keeler Holdings Ltd. A year later, Keeler launched the Pulsair non-contact tonometer, a major innovation in glaucoma screening. Keeler went on to incorporate the Hamblin ophthalmic range and opened its Cumbernauld sales and servicing facility.

Keeler wins the Queen's Award

Keeler’s Pulseair tonometer won a British Design Award as well as the Queen’s Award for Technical Achievement.

Halma Plc acquires Keeler

Two years after Keeler launched the Vantage, a top-of-the-range binocular indirect ophthalmoscope, Keeler was acquired by Halma plc.

Product expansion

During this time, Keeler Ltd repositioned itself in the UK ophthalmic and optometric market, successfully launching:

• The Spectra spectacle mounted binocular indirect ophthalmoscope
• The Pulseair 3000 non-contact tonometer
• The All Pupil II binocular indirect ophthalmoscope
• The Pulseair Easy Eye

• The first wireless indirect ophthalmoscopes
• The Cryomatic ophthalmic cryosurgery unit
• The Pulseair intelliPuff non-contact Tonometer
• The LED powered Spectra Plus binocular indirect ophthalmoscope

Continued innovation

Keeler launched the world’s first headband LED powered wireless BIO – the Vantage Plus LED and a digital version of its popular Vantage Plus LED indirect ophthalmoscope. Keeler also launched a range of Symphony slit lamps.

100th anniversary

Keeler celebrated one hundred years as leaders in the ophthalmic industry.

New further product innovation

Keeler continued to innovate with the launch of its Cryo single-use probe, Tonoclear and Konnect software with Dicom capability.

The primary goal of Keeler is to prevent vision loss by making safe, legal, and high-quality medical devices available to our customers and clients.

Our products meet all applicable regulatory requirements, including UK Medical Device Regulation 2002, Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC, and Medical Device Regulation 2017/745. By affixing the CE and UKCA markings to our products, we certify that they are safe and meet all requirements for environmental, health, and safety.

Our certifications include ISO 13485:2016, ISO 14001, Medical Device Single Audit Programme (MDSAP), UKCA and CE.
